Call for new approach to Timor Sea negotiations

Australia is being urged to commit to a fresh approach to negotiations over oil and gas in the Timor Sea.

A new government has been sworn in in East Timor after the resignation of Xanana Gusmao from the post of Prime Minister.

Rui Araujo will now lead the tiny nation, widely regarded as one of Asia's poorest.

A group of campaigners are calling on Australai to welcome his appointment by committing to a fresh approach to negotiations over oil and gas in the Timor Sea.

The vast reserves have been at the centre of long-standing and bitter negotiations between East Timor and Australia for many years.

Tom Clarke is a spokesman for the Timor Sea Justice Campaign.
