Dot Melbourne was the first, but dot Sydney will be a lot bigger.
Sydney's very own top-level domain name, .sydney, will be launched on Tuesday.
All NSW residents and service providers to the state will be able to register a domain name ending in .sydney.
Adrian Kinderis, the chief executive of ARI Registry Services, which has been contracted to manage .sydney, says there is a lot more interest in .sydney than there was in .melbourne, which was launched just before Christmas in 2014.
"We expect the launch of .sydney to be better, bigger, brighter," Mr Kinderis told AAP.
"I think the numbers will outshine Melbourne."
He said the launch of .melbourne had helped boost interest in .sydney.
But .sydney would also benefit from Sydney's bigger population and its reputation as the tourism capital of Australia.
Mr Kinderis said there had been nearly 2,000 pre-launch applications for .sydney domain names, from owners of various trademarks and from government entities.
For example, BridgeClimb Sydney has www.bridgeclimb.sydney, the Sydney Fish Market has www.fishmarket.sydney and www.seafood.sydney, and Luna Park has www.lunapark.sydney.
Mr Kinderis said 80 per cent of the .melbourne addresses that had been taken up revolved around an industry or sector, for example, www.plumber.melbourne.
Such a web address was easy for people to remember, could attract a large volume of potential clients and was quick to show up in a web search.
"We expect the same sort of behaviour to come through here (Sydney)," Mr Kinderis said.
He said the use by the public of the city-specific domain names had been very encouraging, with some domain name owners reporting a 20 per cent increase in visitors to their webpage even though they had not promoted the new domain name.
Mr Kinderis said no other Australian cities other than Melbourne and Sydney had their own city-specific top-level domain name.
