It's more than 70 years since the city of Darwin came under attack from air raids mounted by Japanese forces.

In 1942 mainland Australia came under attack for the first time when 188 Japanese planes were launched against Darwin.

From the 1930s onwards Japan occupied large parts of China and other parts of Asia and Darwin was seen as a key port for allied forces fighting the Japanese.

Peter Grose is the author of a book on the 1942 Darwin bombings and he spoke with Peggy Giakoumelos.
