Two American tourists were arrested after they vandalised the iconic Colosseum in Rome, the Huffington Post reports.
The two women were reported by other tourists after being seen carving the letters J and N into the amphitheater with a coin.
The names of the Californian women have not yet been released, but they have since apologised for their actions.
“We regret it but we did not imagine it was something so serious,” they said.
The women snuck away from their group and even took a selfie with their work.
Defacing the walls of the Colosseum is illegal, as clearly stated in both English and Italian at the historic site.
The two could face heavy penalties.
