Tax the rich more, make multinationals pay

Australians want to see high income earners pay a higher rate of tax and multinationals pay their way, a new survey has found.

Increase the income tax rate for the rich and remove their superannuation tax concessions.

That's the findings in the latest weekly Essential Research online poll that reflects on the Abbott government's tax review discussion paper that was released on Monday.

More than half (55 per cent) of the 1017 people surveyed believed high earners should have their super tax concession removed while 65 per cent said income tax should be increased for the wealthy.

An even greater number, 76 per cent, said multinational companies should be forced to pay a minimum tax rate on their Australian earnings.

The survey released on Tuesday found a third of people saying negative gearing should be removed, just pipping the 30 per cent who thought it should stay.

Just over half (51 per cent) opposed removing the exemptions on GST, such as on fresh food, while 70 per cent were against an increase in the 10 per cent GST rate.
