Bollywood is well known for its colour, music and dancing - but this year, a film festival hopes to highlight a new direction in some of the movies coming from the Indian subcontinent.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is the largest celebration of Indian cinema in the Southern Hemisphere.

This year, the festival has a new theme, "Equality", which aims to bridge the divide in gender, sexuality, disability and race.

And at a time when violence against women has been making headlines in India - and around the world - it's hoped themes on the silver screen can help drive cultural change.

Indian actress Vidya Balan is the festival's ambassador, and is in Australia for the festival launch.
