SES volunteers are scouring bushland north of Brisbane in a desperate search for a 56-year-old man who's been missing since Wednesday.

Searchers have found footprints and some items belonging to Raymond Westrop - a frail man who went walking in the Mount Mee area, west of Caboolture, on Wednesday evening.

Worried relatives have told police he has a medical condition that means he's unlikely to cope with challenging terrain in the area.

The search began on Thursday and was ramped up on Friday, with SES volunteers and police combing an area that takes in pastoral land as well as dense bushland with steep hills and valleys.

Police won't say what items have been found but are urging people who live in the area to check and recheck their properties, including any outbuildings, sheds or caravans.

They've also asked residents to check creeks and dams for any sign he might have sought water there, and they want to hear from motorists who may have spotted him walking on local roads.

The search effort has involved 120 SES volunteers, quad bikes, mounted police, and a police helicopter, with a base set up at a sports centre on Florence Lane where Mr Westrop was last seen.

He is described as frail with white hair and green eyes.

It's believed he was wearing navy blue shorts, a red and blue top, white running shoes with green ends on the laces, a polar fleece, and a camouflage rain jacket when he disappeared.
