NSW govt to consider ICAC law change

The NSW government is expected to respond "in due course" to the ICAC request to restore its powers by amending law.

The NSW government is expected to respond to ICAC's claims its powers have been diminished following last week's landmark High Court ruling.

The highest court in the land ruled on a 4-1 majority the ICAC was unable to continue its controversial investigation into senior prosecutor Margaret Cunneen.

The corruption watchdog has urged the government to restore its powers through the ICAC Act, saying last week's decision could kill off investigations and compromise criminal proceedings.

Now, Premier Mike Baird's office is expected to respond after it digests ICAC's request, which included the call for a response "as a matter of priority".

A spokeswoman for the premier said the government would respond "in due course".

The man who founded ICAC said the watchdog had acted beyond its intended powers and had misread the legislation.

"I think they're probably a bit bruised and surprised that they're not quite the heroes anymore," Professor Gary Sturgess told AAP.
