Ignore troublemakers and take deal: Dutton

Refugees on Nauru must ignore "troublemakers" trying to dissuade them from taking up a Cambodian resettlement offer, the Immigration Minister says.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says refugees on Nauru shouldn't heed the advice of "troublemakers" telling them to turn down settlement in Cambodia.

He said detainees who had accepted the offer would be departing shortly and if anyone was considering joining them, now was the time.

"The offer of assistance now is for those people who ... have had the courage to stare down some of the troublemakers on Nauru," he said on Thursday.

"Or even worse still, some people who may be well intentioned here in the Australian community who are messaging back to Nauru that they shouldn't accept the offer."

He said these people were, deliberately or not, trying to "trick" detainees into thinking they could outlast the government and settle in Australia.

"I can promise you - not going to happen," he said.

It comes after Mr Dutton made a video message shown to refugees and played at the Nauru detention centre to outline the scope of Australian government-funded resettlement packages including cash, employment assistance, transitional accommodation, Khmer language classes and health insurance.

"There's no guarantee that this level of support will be offered to people who wait and do not commit to this first group," he said.

Pressed to explain if this meant subsequent groups would get a significantly reduced package or none at all, Mr Dutton simply said such matters would be decided "in due course".

"We want to demonstrate that this can work," he said.

"But we've made it clear that the arrangements won't be as generous."
