Turkish archives won't alter historical fact, says Robertson

A leading human rights lawyer doubts if information in Turkish military archives will settle a row over the use of the word 'genocide' to describe mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks a century ago.

There's growing international support for Armenia's campaign to have the mass killing of up to 1.5 million of its nationals, and the displacement of many more in the dying days of the Ottoman empire, recognised as genocide.

Turkey acknowledges that atrocities occurred, but opposes the use of the term 'genocide'.

President Recep Tayip Erdogan has offered to open up Turkey's military archives in a bid to help resolve what it regards as a historical dispute.

Australian lawyer Geoffrey Robertson has written extensively on the subject and is a vocal advocate of international recognition of the events that transpired as genocide.
