Brother and sister Max and Chloe Esposito are expected to be the first Australians to gain Rio Olympic team spots after oustanding performances at modern pentathlon's Asian championship.
Seventeen-year-old Max Esposito upset a field including London Olympic silver medallist Cao Zhongrong of China to win the qualifying event in Beijing on Tuesday.
It was the first time an Australian man has stood on the podium of an international pentathlon event and came a day after his older sister Chloe claimed an Olympic qualifying spot with a fourth placing in the women's competition.
Modern Pentathlon Australia is expected to nominate the siblings to the Australian Olympic team selection committee, which could begin approving their bids as early as Wednesday.
Olympic spots would secure a dream for the pair, who have for years trained together under their 1984 Olympian father, Daniel Esposito.
The Esposito family relocated to Hungary in 2013, where Max has completed his final year of school by correspondence.
Max was in fifth spot before the final combined running/skiing event but overcame harsh conditions to win by eight points.
"Yes,I'm over the moon at the moment I actually can't believe it," he said.
"I was trying to stay focussed and not worry about all the other people behind me. I was determined to get that first place."
Chloe, 23, finished seventh in her Olympic debut in London.
