The family of slain Melbourne teen Masa Vukotic will have to wait for her accused killer to be assessed for mental impairment before the matter can continue.

Sean Christian Price, 31, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court via videolink this week where his defence barrister asked for an adjournment so Price could be assessed by a forensic psychologist.

The Albion man is accused of murdering Ms Vukotic, 17, as she walked through a park near her Doncaster home on March 17.

Ruth Shann, for Price, told Magistrate Charles Rozencwajg if a report supported mental impairment, there might be no need for a committal mention.

The prosecution did not oppose the adjournment, but Magistrate Rozencwajg said he didn't consider two months to be a short delay.

Ms Shann said Price needed a proper forensic assessment of his fitness to plead.

"We've engaged someone to provide a full assessment," Ms Shann told the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday (Monday).

"Not to delay but to attempt to be sensible," Ms Shann said.

Ms Vukotic's family and friends wore the teen's favourite colour - pink - to the hearing on Monday.

Magistrate Rozencwajg adjourned the committal mention until August 17.

The matter was temporarily suppressed on Monday after Ms Shann submitted the emotive nature of Ms Vukotic's death could prevent Price from getting a fair trial on other crimes for which he stands accused.

Price is also charged with one count of rape, three counts of common assault and two counts of robbery after a string of alleged crimes in Sunshine - a suburb of Melbourne.

The offences are alleged to have taken place within a 48-hour period following Ms Vukotic's death.
