A US artist has developed a tree that grows 40 fruits.

Sam Van Aken, an art professor from Syracuse University in the United States, grafted several fruit tree species into a single tree.

It's called the "Tree of 40 Fruit" and it took several trials and five years.

In summer, it produces plums, nectarines, peaches, cherries, apricots and almonds - all rare and unique varieties.

In an interview with Epicurious, Van Aken said that despite the variety, owners weren't "inundated" with fruit.

"I've been told by people that have [a tree] at their home that it provides the perfect amount and perfect variety of fruit," he said.

"So rather than having one variety that produces more than you know what to do with, it provides good amounts of each of the 40 varieties. Since all of these fruit ripen at different times, from July through October, you also aren't inundated."
