More than 80,000 people took to Sydney's streets to run, sweat and strut in the world's biggest fun run, the City to Surf.

Marathon runners and elite wheelchair athletes took off first on a sunny Sunday, followed by fanatics, fancy dress funsters, pensioners and parents with prams.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott joined the throng and joked that stress had slowed him down this year.

He managed to beat his goal of finishing the 14km run with his vision-impaired friend Nathan Johnstone in 80 minutes but joked the course record of 40.03 minutes, set by Steve Moneghetti in 1991, was safe.

"I think everyone's record is safe with me," he told reporters after arriving at the Bondi Beach finish line.

"Age and stress are slowing me down every year." The race was won by western Sydney athlete Brad Milosevic who beat 80,000 others in a time of 42 minutes and 15 seconds.

The first-placed woman was Queenslander Cassandra Fien with a time of 46 minutes and 39 seconds. Now in its 45th year, the annual event has raised more than $4 million for charity.
