Australian Jarmila Gajdosova has lost her second-round match in three sets at the Japan women's open tennis in Tokyo.

Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine downed world No.81 Gajdosova on Thursday 6-1 3-6 6-4 at the Ariake Colosseum.

Bondarenko had opened the door for Gajdosova at the tournament, after the 85th-ranked player had eliminated top seed and world No.12 Carla Suarez Navarro in the first round.

The Australian had opened her Tokyo campaign with a routine 6-3 6-4 first-round win over Russian qualifier Alexandra Panova.

Fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovic is through to the quarter-finals and a showdown with American Madison Brengle.

Seventh-seeded Tomljanovic accounted for local veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm on Wednesday with a composed 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory.

Second seed Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan was eliminated on Thursday in a 6-2 7-5 defeat to Magda Linette of Poland.

The tournament is wide open after the defeats of top seed Suarez Navarro, No.2 Diyas and fourth-seeded American Alison Riske, a 0-6 6-4 6-1 loser to Zheng Saisai of China.
