Mum-daughter killer may have more victims

Murdered mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her young daughter Khandalyce may have been victims of a serial killer, investigating police say.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that murdered Alice Springs mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her young daughter Khandalyce may have been the victims of a serial killer.

The brutal manner in which the 20-year-old mother and her two-year-old daughter were killed has led police to investigate if there are any similar deaths.

"There is no escaping the fact there are some traits of these victims which mean it could be the work of a serial killer, including dumping the body in Belanglo," a NSW police officer told News Corp.

Investigators believe they have spoken to people with "actual knowledge" of what happened to Ms Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter, and believe multiple people may have been involved.

Police are almost certain the young mother was killed in NSW's Belanglo State Forest some time around December 2008.

Trail bike rider discovered her remains in 2010.

But where and when Khandalyce died and how her remains came to be found in a suitcase alongside a South Australian highway 1200km away and five years later remains a mystery.

"We are currently pursuing a very strong line of inquiry but we are keeping an open mind," NSW Police Homicide Squad Commander Mick Willing said last week.

"We've looked at and are now speaking to people who we suspect have actual knowledge of what occurred to this young mum and her little girl."

A convicted pedophile has reportedly been identified as a possible suspect.

He is serving a four-and-a-half year sentence in Cessnock Prison and has previously spent time in jail on child sex offences, according to media reports.

It's believed he was interviewed at a local police station last week and returned to the jail's maximum security wing.

SA police on Monday said there was "no evidence to prove or disprove" speculation that a serial killer murdered Karlie and Khandalyce.

Police also said they were "happy" with the progress of the investigation.
