Driverless cars to 'see' around corners

Adelaide technology company Cohda Wireless is launching a sensor to allow driverless cars "see" around corners via radio waves.

Driverless cars will be able to see around corners using radio waves, a South Australian technology company says.

A "breakthrough" sensor, launched in Adelaide on Monday, lets driverless cars detect buildings, road signs and see around corners with a 360-degree weatherproof sensor.

Cohda Wireless, which designed the sensor, says it's a game-changer for the up-and-coming industry.

"Unlike existing technology, the V2X-Radar is a 360-degree radar which allows cars to `see' through rain, snow or fog and even around corners," chief executive Paul Gray said.

"The technology has the opportunity to revolutionise the industry by addressing some of the key constraints of the technology so far."

The sensor can be used in both driverless and traditional cars.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the driverless car industry was expected to be worth $90 billion per year worldwide by 2030.

An International Driverless Cars Conference will be held in Adelaide this week ahead of on-road trials.

A senate inquiry has been told that driverless cars are inevitable because of their safety and economic benefits.
