A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck East Timor.

The quake, 83 km west of the captial Dili, was 143 km deep, the United States Geological Survey said.

There was minor damage but no immediate report of casualties from the quake.

The earthquake also hit the Indonesian island of Alor, damaging homes and other buildings.

Indonesia's disaster management agency said there were no reports of casualties from Wednesday's quake which also rattled neighbouring East Timor.

"Some buildings were damaged including a relatively big church just near the border and telephone lines were temporarily damaged," said Daud, an official with the national disaster management agency.

The USGS is reporting there have been three earthquakes in East Timor since Tuesday.

The other two quakes measured at 5.7 and 4.9 in magnitude.

Another quake struck off the west coast of Indonesia's most populated island of Java, causing buildings in the capital Jakarta to shake but there were no immediate reports of damage.
