International advertising agency M&C Saatchi has been slammed by industry publication Mumbrella for its burlesque-themed work party held in Sydney.

The agency's 21st birthday celebration held at Merivale's Beresford Hotel on Thursday featured shirtless male waiters, leather-clad burlesque dancers and a stripper who jumped out of a cake.

Video below shows some of the antics of the night.
In a leader piece the publication criticises the agency for alleged sexism and calls for the advertising industry to move beyond the Mad Men era.

"It was rather more like a stag party than a 21st... it would be fascinating to know the internal process at M&C Saatchi that decided this would be a good look," the article reads.

"Did nobody wonder aloud whether this would be the right look in 2016? And were they listened to if so?"
The night also included three women wearing underwear and dancing with Louis Vuitton bags over their heads.

"It felt like something out of Mad Men. Objectified, near-naked female bodies with bags for heads."

Mumbrella editor Alex Hayes told AAP that although this sort of activity was rare in the industry today, those who have the power to stop it rarely do.

The agency's regional creative director, Tom McFarlane, said in a reply published by Mumbrella that the party expressed the agency's creativity.

"Our party was a celebration of 21 years of creativity ... you'll see that creativity at M&C Saatchi takes many forms," McFarlane said.

"Throughout the evening there were a diverse repertoire of acts ... All these amazing performers have appeared at popular music and arts festivals throughout Australia."

AAP is seeking comment from M&C Saatchi.
