Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has braved a dose of diabetes in a jar, tasting one of Canberra's famous "freakshakes" while on a street walk.

Mr Turnbull hit the cafe strip in Manuka for a leisurely Saturday morning coffee with Liberal senator Zed Seselja.

He was offered a "Gaypat" - or Golden Gaytime flavoured shake - from Patissez, the cafe which started the freakshake phenomenon in the national capital last year.

My Kitchen Rules contestants, mother and daughter team Gina and Anna Petridis invented the elaborate shakes which have gone global on social media and sparked an increase in interstate visitors.

Mr Turnbull obligingly stuck his finger into the drink and had a taste, saying it was "very good".

But he swiftly departed the cafe before having to consume the enormous jar of calories.

A lesbian dog walking club, enjoying brunch at an outdoor table, heckled the prime minister.

"We want marriage equality," they told the PM.

He replied that he understood their enthusiasm for the issue.

Later he told locals queuing up for selfies that he liked the bike paths in Canberra because as a student he was once knocked off his bicycle.

"I've been very wary of riding on the roads," he said.

Mr Turnbull also admired childrens' puppies and the "Manuka Bear" a huge Bourvier dog named Boston, with black curly fur, weighing 50 kilograms.

Former Defence Force Chief Angus Houston appeared amused to see the prime minister in his neighbourhood.
