Authorities in Queensland's north are targeting backpacker hostels in a bid to prevent any local spread of the Zika virus.

A resident from the town of Bowen, south of Townsville, has tested positive for the virus after returning from a trip to Tonga.

It's the 13th recent Queensland case of Zika, a mosquito-borne virus which has been spreading quickly overseas and has been linked to birth defects.

Director of Tropical Public Health Services in Cairns, Dr Richard Gair, says preventive mosquito spraying is under way.

"We've made a point of treating backpacker accommodation because obviously a lot of people in backpacker accommodation have recently come in from overseas," he told ABC radio.

The Zika-carrying mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in found in north Queensland.

The person at the centre of the latest confirmed case fell ill just a few days after returning home, but is now recovering.

Authorities have said the risk of local transmission remains low, but residents in Bowen have been urged to spray their homes for mosquitoes and eliminate any potential breeding sites.

Unborn babies are at the most risk of harm as Zika has been linked to microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads.
