Keeping a learner driver logbook is one of the rites of passage for NSW teenagers learning to drive but they could soon be for the scrap-heap, Roads Minister Duncan Gay says.
Mr Gay has announced he wants the paper books to be replaced by an app and is calling on the technology community to develop alternatives.
"The paper learner log book system has been around for 16 years," he said.
"Ask any learner or parent - it's time for the system to tap into new technology and move forward to the digital age."
Mr Gay said the apps would need to digitally capture information required for paper-based log books, removing the need for ongoing calculations.
"The apps also need to be designed so as to not distract learner drivers or their supervisors," he said.
"Learner drivers are not permitted to use their mobile phones while in a vehicle."
