Three government backbenchers have told their colleagues they see merit in a royal commission into the banking and financial services sectors.

Three government backbenchers have used a meeting of coalition MPs to call for a royal commission into the banking and financial services sectors.

Six MPs raised the issue during a meeting of Liberal and Nationals MPs on Tuesday.

The other three were in favour of greater powers for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.
