A second Iranian man has tried to set himself on fire on Nauru but security guards were able to stop him, refugee advocates say.

The man aged in his 20s, doused himself in petrol at the Nauru detention centre on Sunday night, police detained him briefly and then released him, refugee advocate Ian Rintoul told AAP.

A 23-year-old Iranian man set himself on fire last week and later died from the burns in a Brisbane hospital.
