Independent MP Cathy McGowan will back the Turnbull government on supply and confidence, but won't strike a permanent deal.

The returning MP sat down with the prime minister in Melbourne on Friday, for what she described as a rich discussion.

"While maintaining my complete independence, I am prepared to contribute to the stability of the 45th parliament by continuing with my past practice of supporting the government of the day," Ms McGowan said.

The member for Indi said she would be considering each piece of legislation on its merits and will vote with her conscience and for her electorate.

"I asked for goodwill, I asked for regular being in touch with each other, I asked for good governance and stability," she said, insisting her preference was not to go back to an election.

"The overwhelming wish of the people in Albury, Wodonga and Benalla is that government gets out of their way and they can get on with their lives... I hope today that I've done my bit for my community in making that happen."

Mr Turnbull's meeting with Ms McGowan follows similar sit-downs with Bob Katter and Nick Xenophon.

Mr Katter will also support supply and confidence in a returned Turnbull government.
