Pokemon users told to keep off Qld schools

Queensland Police are warning Pokemon Go users to keep out of school grounds or risk a hefty fine.

Pokemon Go players will venture just about anywhere to "catch 'em all", but they risk a hefty fine if they trespass onto a school in the Sunshine State.

Queensland police are warning users of the popular mobile game to keep off school grounds or risk charges and a fine of up to $2200.

The warning came after police managed to "catch" Pokemon character Charmander at St Joseph's Primary School in Mount Isa before a player had the chance.

Sergeant Cath Purcell said while Pokemon was fun, police had a responsibility to protect schoolchildren from a range of safety threats.

"Pokemon is a wonderful thing but users need to be considerate to one another," she told AAP.

"You certainly don't trespass onto schools. It's certainly not a place you should collect Pokemon."

She also urged players not to trespass onto businesses and to resist the urge to catch Pokemon while driving.

"You don't want to see someone have an accident or injury," she said.

RACQ spokesman Paul Turner said Pokemon Go was just another symptom of the larger problem of mobile phone use behind the wheel.

"Whether it's Pokemon, Facebook or texting, they are all symptoms of a problem that we need to deal with," he said.

"It's costing lives, it's causing massive congestion issues because of the crashes.

"We're not saying don't play the game, but we are saying don't play the game while you're driving."

Sgt Purcell said Pokemon Go players should also be constantly aware of their surroundings to avoid making themselves a potential victim of crime.
