New ambassador to Afghanistan

Australia has a new ambassador to Afghanistan, career diplomat Richard Feakes.

A career diplomat will be posted to Afghanistan as Australia's new ambassador.

Richard Feakes has previously served as deputy head of mission in Baghdad and worked in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Thursday thanked the outgoing ambassador Matthew Anderson for his work in the role since 2015.
