A fire causing an estimated $3 million worth of damage to a Melbourne auto spare parts factory is now being investigated by police.

It took more than 50 firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control, which broke out before 8.45pm on Thursday.

Police say it is yet to be determined if the fire is suspicious.

Fire crews have kept watch over the charred factory on Friday, looking out for flare-ups.

"The factory contained a high fuel load, there were LPG tanks, petrol thinners, a lot of fuel from the vehicles," MFB's Brendan Angwin told Ten Eyewitness News.

"There was a strong wind blowing which fanned the flames and made it harder for firefighters to battle the fire."

The damage bill is estimated to be more than $3 million.

Manager Adam Iminir was lost for words when he saw the damage on Friday.

"This has been an 18 to 20-year-old business that we've put together and we put a lot of effort to get it here," he told Network Ten.

"I don't know what to say."

Smoke blanketed the Campbellfield area but the MFB said it did not pose a threat to the community.
