A woman who threw a banana towards indigenous Adelaide Crows star Eddie Betts is an "idiot", says SA Premier Jay Weatherill.
Mr Weatherill posted to Twitter and Facebook on Sunday to vent his disgust at the incident during Saturday night's AFL game against Port Adelaide.
The premier noted Betts' impressive "skills and flair" on the field, saying he won the game "single handed - he is a rolled gold champion" before turning on the woman who threw a banana and made rude gestures to the player.
"As for the idiot who thought throwing a banana was funny, it wasn't. It appears this was just a particularly nasty form of racist comment," he wrote.
"I am pleased the club has taken strong and immediate action."
Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane also tweeted about the incident.
"Appalling conduct directed at Eddie Betts - no place for it in our society," he wrote.
