Consumers to be notified of data breaches

Draft laws to introduce a mandatory serious data breach notification scheme are before the parliament.

Australians would be notified of serious breaches of their data under new draft laws before the parliament.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan on Wednesday introduced legislation to impose mandatory data breach notification scheme on agencies, organisations and entities regulated by the Privacy Act.

He told parliament notification of a serious breach would allow the victim to take action to protect themselves.
