The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) has reportedly formed the view that Lachie Whitfield and two former Greater Western Sydney club officials should be charged under the AFL's anti-doping code, which draws a maxium four-year penalty.
Whitfield is alleged to have breached the AFL's code in 2015 when he stayed at the house of former Giants' welfare manager Craig Lambert.
It was reported this week that those two, as well as former GWS football manager Graeme Allan, were set to receive infraction notices.
According to a Fairfax report the officials allegedly hid Whitfield at Lambert's house for three days, fearing the player could test positive to performance-enhancing drugs after taking illicit drugs.
The trio have denied this was the case, saying Whitfield concocted the drug story and sent text messages that appeared to illustrate this to his then-girlfriend in an attempt to end a difficult relationship.
The players and officials claim the 2012 No.1 draft pick was actually suffering from a migraine.
Allan, who has engaged the services of senior litigation and dispute resolution lawyer Leon Zwier, is now at Collingwood and Lambert is with the Brisbane Lions.
GWS commissioned an independent investigation last year into the allegations and found there was no significant basis to support the allegation Whitfield had attempted to avoid drug testers.
The AFL is believed to be still considering the evidence presented by its integrity unit, with Fairfax reporting that it will reach an decision with ASADA's approval.
