A Moroccan morning television show has apologised for a "completely inappropriate" segment that told female viewers they could deal with domestic violence by concealing the signs of abuse with makeup.

TV show Sabahiyat on station 2M ran the segment with makeup artist Lilia Mouline about how to "camouflage traces of violence", just days before International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

'We hope these beauty tips will help you carry on with your daily life," Mouline said as she demonstrated the tips on a woman with a bruised face. It is unclear if the woman was an actual victim of domestic violence.

"Use foundation with yellow in it, if you use the white one, your red punch marks will always show."

A petition quickly appeared online calling on the Moroccan High Authority of Audiovisual Communication to intervene and attracted hundreds of signatures.
An unqualified apology was posted on the 2M Facebook page in response to the backlash.

"Following the broadcast by the channel during the show Sabahyate of 23 November 2016 a section makeup on "the camouflage traces of violence", the direction of 2M provides the following clarification:

- the management believes that this section is completely inappropriate and has an editorial error of judgement in view of the sensitivity and the gravity of the subject of violence against women.

- this approach is in complete contradiction with the editorial line of the chain, with the charter 2M valorization of the image of the woman and especially with the commitment of 2M for 27 years in favour of the defence The rights of the wife," the statement read.
