The World Press Photo foundation has announced its winning images for 2017 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
From the battle for Mosul in Iraq to the Mediterranean migrant crisis, many winning images capture dramatic scenes on the frontlines of global news stories.
Winners in the nature category illustrate humanity's impact on animals, while winners in the sports category capture stunning triumphs and failures.
But it was the winner of the World Press Photo of the Year which has proved most controversial.
The photo shows off-duty police officer Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, taken moments after he assassinated Russia’s Ambassador to Turkey at a gallery in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
