How the NSW greyhound racing ban came about before being reversed just three months later.

2015

Feb - trainers, along with those from Victoria and Queensland, suspended after allegations of live baiting on Four Corners, which leads to the board of Greyhound Racing NSW being stood down

March - Premier Mike Baird launches special commission of inquiry to investigate governance, integrity and animal welfare led by former High Court judge Michael McHugh

2016

June - McHu gh releases report which includes evidence of live baiting and mass culling

July 7 - Baird bans the sport across the state from July 2017

July 13 - Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce criticises the ban

August 24 - The bill to ban racing passes state parliament's lower house following a late-night debate with three Nationals MPs crossing the floor to oppose it

September 29 - Newspoll shows Baird's approval falls from 61 per cent to 39 per cent

October 4 - Media reports that Greyhounds Transition Taskforce head John Keniry tried to quit his post because he did not support the ban

October 6 - Speculation Nationals MPs are preparing to contest Troy Grant's leadership reaches fever pitch

October 10 - Media speculation of a possible backflip before a NSW Nationals meeting. Keniry's report into compensation due to be handed down.

October 11 - The premier announces his backflip, saying he is "sorry" and he made the "wrong call".

November 14 - Grant steps down as Nationals NSW leader after initial vote count for the Orange by-election shows loss of support for his party, with John Barilaro elected unopposed as new leader.

A week later the Nationals lose the once-safe seat of Orange to the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. Support for the racing ban among reasons for the result.

2017

January - Baird resigns as premier

February - A report on the reformation of the greyhound racing industry is released by the NSW government.
