Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz, has written to the FBI requesting the agency turn over all memos written by the former FBI Director, James Comey, about his interactions with President Donald Trump.
Former bureau director Comey, who was fired by President Trump last week, reportedly kept extensive records about his interactions with the president.
"If true, these memoranda raise questions as to whether the President attempted to influence or impede the FBI's investigation as it relates to Lt. Gen. Flynn," Congressman Chaffetz wrote in letter to the FBI.
Details of the paper trail were included in an explosive report by the New York Times on Tuesday evening, which alleged president Trump asked the FBI Director to close the agency's investigation into former White House National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn.
The White House has denied the report.
The article relied on two accounts of a memo written by the FBI Director after his meeting with President Trump, though reporters said they had not directly seen the memo itself.
"The memo was part of a paper trail Mr Comey created documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation," the New York Times reported.
According to the paper's sources: "Mr Comey created similar memos — including some that are classified — about every phone call and meeting he had with the president."
Congressman Chaffetz has said he is now determined to uncover the memo.
"I need to see it sooner rather than later," the Utah Congressman tweeted.
"I have my subpoena pen ready."
The FBI has been given until May 24 to turn over the documents.
