Sea World's polar bear cub is a girl and now the Gold Coast theme park wants the public to name her.

The cub's gender had been unknown until recently as she's been closely cared for by mum Liya in a den, but Sea World's Trevor Long confirmed the 10-week-old cub's identity on Thursday.

The park, which expects the cub to go on public display some time in September, is now seeking input from the public for a name for their latest attraction.

A shortlist of four names have been drawn up for the cub, of Russian or Inuit origins.

The options are Mishka, Inuit for "little bear", Arina, Russian for "peace", Katya, Russian for "pure" or Nukka which is Inuit for "little sister".

The theme park is welcoming public votes on its website.

News of the little bear's gender will be a significant boost to Sea World staff given her twin - also female - died in May.

At the time, Mr Long said female cubs were prized due to their breeding potential and the cub's death was "even more sad" due to her gender.

The surviving cub is a half-brother to Henry, the male cub born to Liya at the theme park in 2013.

Mr Long said the selection of Russian and Inuit names was an attempt to create a connection back to the Arctic after Henry had been given an "Australian" name.

Henry has since been relocated to a Canadian polar bear habitat with the long-term aim of becoming part of an international breeding group.
