Businesses that fail to meet their obligations as sponsors of skilled visa workers will be named and shamed under proposed new laws.
The immigration department is now only able to publish limited information regarding breaches.
But legislation introduced to parliament on Wednesday will allow them to publicly detail information about the company and any penalties issued.
"The publication of detailed sanction information will deter businesses from breaching their obligations and allow Australians and overseas workers to inform themselves about breaches," assistant minister Alex Hawke told MPs.
The new bill will also give the department the power to collect, record, store and use tax file numbers linked to temporary and permanent skill visas.
The move will help the department ensure sponsors and workers are complying with their visa obligations and conditions by allowing them to match and access data, including salary information held by the tax office.
Mr Hawke said it could help identify employers who underpay visa holders and visa holders who work for more than one employer.
The data will also be used for research purposes.
The measures are part of the government's move to abolish the 457 visa program and replace it with a new temporary skill shortage visa.
