Kevin Walters has best job at Qld: Tallis

Kevin Walters will make an ideal NRL coach one day but has the best job in the world as Queensland Origin mentor, Gold Coast ambassador Gorden Tallis says.

Even Gold Coast ambassador Gorden Tallis admits Kevin Walters made the right call to keep the "best job in the world" as Queensland coach and overlook the Titans gig.

Walters is expected to re-sign with Queensland Rugby League after this week officially ruling himself out of the running for the vacant Gold Coast coaching job.

Walters was in the mix to replace sacked Gold Coast mentor Neil Henry after becoming just the third Queensland coach to win his first two series at the helm.

Tallis said he couldn't blame Walters for keeping the Maroons' reins.

"Personally, I think Kevvie Walters has the best job in the world," said Tallis, who played 20 Origins for Queensland.

"If I was a coach, I would be coaching those three games for Queensland.

"You've got passion there and you have got people who want to be there.

"You've got players disappointed they don't get to wear that jersey when they don't get picked, let alone the millions of Queenslanders walking the streets who wish they could play."

But Tallis believed former Queensland teammate Walters would make his mark one day as a NRL coach.

Tallis was convinced the easy going Walters would make it as a career coach when eight players were hit with 12-month Origin bans for breaking 2016 Emerging Maroons camp curfew.

"When he made that real tough call and sat down those eight players, that's when I knew Kevvie Walters would be a great coach," he said.

"He got the discipline right.

"Don't let the joker fool you. He is the most serious, most passionate rugby league player I have played with, the most passionate and the smartest player I have played with.

"There might have been better players but no one smarter.

"He has proven that at Origin level and I am sure one day he will prove that in the NRL as well."
