Ireland name Rugby League World Cup squad

The Wakefield Wildcats' Liam Finn and Scott Grix will lead Ireland at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with pool games in Cairns, Port Moresby and Perth.

Ireland have announced their squad for the Rugby League World Cup, with a mix of seasoned internationals, Super League and domestic players and recruits.

Mark Aston has kept the core squad from the past few European Championships and the players who had helped Ireland to qualify for the tournament.

The Wakefield Wildcats' Liam Finn and Scott Grix are captain and vice-captain respectively and have more than 20 years' experience playing for Ireland.

Former Wests Tigers NRL fullback Shannon McDonnell is in the squad.

Irish-born Super League giant James Hasson leads out an impressive pack including youngsters Brad Singleton, the King brothers and Joe Philbin of Warrington who had impressed in the qualifiers.

There is also Kyle Amor, Anthony Mullally, Tyrone McCarthy and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook who bring quality and experience.

Ireland will play pool games against Italy on October 29 in Cairns, Papua New Guinea on November 5 in Port Moresby and Wales a week later in Perth.
