The Kenyan lawyer for an Australian teacher shot and killed in Nairobi last week says his client had previously been granted a restraining order against her estranged husband.

Gabrielle Maina was shot in the exclusive suburb of Karen on Thursday during what was initially believed to be a botched robbery involving assailants on motorbikes.

Ms Maina's lawyer, George King'ori, has told the ABC she feared for her life.

Mr King’ori also said Ms Maina had been granted a restraining order in April against her estranged husband.
"She required a restraining order against the husband from constantly stalking (and) approaching her place of work," he said.

The lawyer said Ms Maina had been trying to secure custody of the couple's two sons as the relationship was breaking down.

"She approached us for assistance ... she was afraid," Mr King'ori told the ABC.

It's believed Ms Maina, originally from Armidale, had just dropped off her son at a friend's home when she was killed.

The 40-year-old moved to Nairobi in 2015 and was head teacher at the elite Hillcrest Preparatory School.

Before that Ms Maina had taught English and drama for almost five years at Sarah Redfern High School in southwest Sydney.

Security company Insight Secure, which monitors local incidents, said she was shot in Nairobi by "unidentified assailants" and "a 9mm cartridge was recovered at the crime scene".

The Kenya high commission in Canberra last week said investigations were underway to ensure the culprits were caught.
