Australia refugee deal still on offer: NZ

An offer to take 150 refugees from Australian offshore detention centres remains on the table under New Zealand's new Labour government.

New Zealand's often-rejected offer to take 150 asylum seekers from Australia's offshore detention centres remains on the table, new Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says.

Both countries have had two new prime ministers since the offer was first made four years ago by John Key to Julia Gillard.

Ms Ardern says her government remains committed to the offer to accept the refugees from Nauru and Manus Island, but she'll check first details of the commitment.

That includes finding out exactly what obligations New Zealand would take up, and how the offer fits with New Zealand's intent around taking United Nations mandated refugees.

Any refugees taken in would also need to fit within the quota, she said.

The offer was most recently rejected by Malcolm Turnbull in meetings with Bill English in Queenstown in February.

There are fears refugees would use New Zealand as a back door for entry to Australia.
