The Richmond player at the centre of a topless photo scandal assured the woman it had been deleted, her lawyers say, and its release has had a "devastating impact" on her wellbeing.
Days after the Tigers' historic grand final victory on September 30, a photo was circulated on social media showing an unidentified topless woman wearing a 2017 premiership medal.
Maurice Blackburn Lawyers on Monday said the Richmond player involved told their client the photo was deleted and she was shocked to see it surface on social media.
"We can confirm that the woman knew the player prior to the 2017 Grand Final and believed there was a level of trust between them," it said in a statement on Monday.
"She maintains that she insisted he delete the photo from his mobile phone as soon as it was taken, and that he assured her it had been."
The woman was "extremely confused" when she saw the photo online and lawyers say she approached the player and the Richmond Football Club to get it removed from the internet.
When it was apparent it had gone viral, she contacted police for help in getting the picture taken down, rather than pursuing a criminal investigation, the firm said.
The woman has not received any money or compensation from the player, Richmond Football Club or the AFL, and only dropped the case to try and protect her identity and further distress.
Richmond president Peggy O'Neal and premiership player Nathan Broad are due to address the media in Melbourne at 11am.
