Gender diversity explored in powerful films about transgender life

Immerse yourself in some knowledge ahead of Insight's show on transgender relationships with these films on life in the trans community.

Laverne Cox: The T Word 

USA 

Transgender actor Laverne Cox presents a detailed look at the lives of seven transgender young people in the US, following how they navigate the already-turbulent teenage years and tackle dating, sex, friendships, relationships with parents, violence, discrimination, police profiling and education. 



Insight: Transgender 

Australia, 2013 

Seven-year-old school girl Maddi loves dancing, the colour pink and wearing dresses. But only a year ago Maddi was known to her friends and family as 'Maddokk’. She was born a boy.

Psychologists and psychiatrists say people are presenting as transgender at younger and younger ages.

But parents are at loss to know whether their child is truly transgender or if it’s 'just a phase". And the stakes are high – especially with the availability of medical interventions like puberty blockers and hormone changers.

Insight speaks with children and their families, asking how parents can be sure whether their child is transgender and how they’re choosing to deal with it.
52 Tuesdays

In this surprising and touching film, 16-year-old Billie's reluctant path to independence is accelerated when her mother reveals plans to gender transition and their time together becomes limited to Tuesday afternoons. Winner of the Crystal Bear 'Generation 14plus - Best Film' at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival. 



Mr Miss World 

United Kingdom, 2007 

Forty one-year-old Gavin decides to fulfil a lifetime ambition by entering the final of the Mr Miss World contest - the beauty pageant event for transgender people held in Thailand each year. Gavin, also called Leah, is Miss England, the first ever British entrant. Among the contestants is Darlene, who is from Sydney but is representing Egypt. Darlene is transgender and has been living as a woman since she was 18.



The Feed: The Transitioning Face of the Military 

Australia, 2016

The Feed's Patrick Abboud gets unprecedented access inside the Australian military to talk to two transwomen about their experience transitioning from male to female; both in the traditionally patriarchal world of the armed forces, and in their personal lives. They are at the forefront of a radical shift in military culture as it becomes more diverse and accepting.

Tiresia 

France, 2003 

This psychological thriller recounts the ancient Greek myth of a blind prophet who lived as both a man and a woman. Tiresia, a Brazilian transsexual, is kidnapped and locked away by a man called Terranova. He considers that in Tiresia - a beauty created by man - he has found the perfect rose, superior to the work of God. Nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.



Dateline: High Heels and Hijabs 

Australia, 2015

Indonesia has a vibrant transgender culture and tradition, but there’s been a rise in intolerance in recent years from Muslim fundamentalists. David O’Shea gets an insight into the community and its fight for equal rights.
Beautiful Boxer 

Thailand, 2003

Based upon the incredible true story of Nong Toom (Asanee Suwan) – a champion Kickboxer who became a woman. Knowing he was different, Nong must overcome poverty, prejudice and fierce opponents to become a champion and find his true self.
