Qld school mourns after student's death

A Gold Coast high school is in mourning after a Year 10 student collapsed in class and later died in hospital.

A northern Gold Coast high school will offer counselling to students following the death of a 15-year-old boy who suffered a medical episode in class.

Paramedics were called to Ormeau Woods State High School about 11.35am on Thursday after the Year 10 student suffered what acting principal Dan Finn described as a "serious medical incident" in class.

It is understood the boy was in cardiac arrest and despite the efforts of bystanders he died shortly after being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Mr Finn wrote a post on the school's Facebook page that support would be offered to affected staff and students.

"Guidance or counselling services are being made available for anyone who may require support," he wrote.

"Students can access counselling services in the Resource Centre tomorrow by asking for an out-of-class pass from their class teacher."

The post prompted an outpouring of support in the comments section.

"Love, light and condolences to this poor family, truly heartbreaking," Jewel Cole wrote.
