There's unprecedented political momentum behind a major new nine-nation free-trade deal aimed at eliminating trade barriers across the Asia-Pacific region.

Australia and the United States, joined by New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Peru, Chile and Brunei, have met ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' summit in Honolulu.

They've agreed to the phased elimination of tariffs and other trade barriers in an effort to boost growth and create jobs as the global economy sputters.

Kerri Worthington reports.
