A group of Catholic bishops has called for Australia's politicians to celebrate Australia Day by giving asylum seekers a fair go and commit to shorter detention times.

The Catholic Bishops Commission for Justice, Ecology and Development says three months should be long enough for identity and security checks before asylum seekers are released into the community while their applications are considered.

Four of the bishops work directly with asylum seekers in detention centres.

One of them, the Bishop of Broome, Christopher Saunders, visits detainees at the Curtin Detention Centre.

He's told Murray Silby it's a good time for politicians to do more than talk about the Australian sense of justice and compassion.
