China has emerged as a large aid, as well as trade, partner in the Pacific region - but what's the motive?.

Pacific Island nations have long been at the centre of a courting game between countries vying for political influence in the region by donating aid.

 

Russian Foreign Prime Minister visited Pacific Island leaders in Fiji this week for the first time since the Cold War.

 

The United Arab Emirates and Israel have also shown renewed interest in the region.

 

Australia remains the Pacific Island's largest investor, trader and cultural influence - investing over a billion dollars in aid annually.

Jenny Hayward-Jones, Melanesia program director at the Lowy Institute, spoke with Biwa Kwan, about China's aid activity.
