The Greens say new data on political donations highlights why the major parties are blocking funding reform.

Figures released by the Australian Electoral Commission show the poker machine and tobacco lobbies spent almost $16-million in political advertising and party donations to try to influence party policies.

Pubs and clubs spent almost $2 million dollars on political parties, as the sector launched a campaign against gaming reforms.

The Liberals and Nationals received the most funds, but Labor Party branches in New South Wales and Victoria were also significant beneficiaries.

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon told Greg Dyett that only individuals should be allowed to make donations to political parties.
