Sri Lanka's Minister of Mass Media and Information is recovering in a Melbourne hospital after falling three storeys from his hotel balcony.

Keheliya Rambukwella landed on an area of concrete, dislocating both ankles, and had to undergo surgery on one leg.

Mr Rambukwella, who had been on a private visit to Melbourne, fell while trying to raise the alarm, after accidentally locking himself out of his room on the balcony.

From his hospital bed, he spoke with SBS Radio Sinhalese program broadcaster, Vijaya Karunasena
