A Queensland private members bill giving police powers to order the removal of face coverings for identity checks has been put on hold.

A Queensland private members bill giving police powers to order the removal of face coverings for identity checks has been put on hold, ahead of the state election campaign.

Independent MP Peter Wellington introduced the bill late last year after a Sydney Muslim woman's jail sentence was overturned because her identity could not be verified.

Queensland Muslim community groups have been meeting over the issue, but have not yet announced their response to the Bill.

Mr Wellington is a five-term independent and held the Sunshine Coast seat of Nicklin by a 16 per cent margin at the last election.

He told Queensland correspondent Stefan Armbruster he plans to reintroduce the Bill if re-elected next month.
